French Muslim leaders stated yesterday, “They have hit us all. We are all victims. These people [the murderers] are a minority”. And this statement is much more important than any of the soundbite platitudes and handwringing-rhetoric of eager politicians.
In his column in today’s Times David Aaronovitch upbraids all members of the apologist liberal left in this country as collaborators in the slaughter. Our ‘complicity’ springs from tolerating the rights (sic.) of the majority of [reasonable] Muslims to complain about insults and say they’re angry when things they don’t like are published. In this, says Aaronovitch, we help create the “permissive fluid in which the violent zealot swims”. On top of what he calls the establishment’s cowardice in shying away from offering anything comparable to Charlie Hebdo’s output, we all stand convicted by David – journalist and counsel-in-chief for the prosecution.
If you disagree with the columnist’s opinion that there is a reciprocity between the freedom for the observant to practice their faith without let or hindrance, and freedom for those who would comment on or ridicule a faith without let or hindrance, then you fail to understand the nature of a modern civilized society. Furthermore, the fact that magazines like Charlie Hebdo are run via subscription rather than by proscription means the individual is perfectly free to absorb or ignore its content… its very existence.
And here is the difference between the gunmen and the Muslim leaders who so unequivocally and with dignified reserve condemned the slaughter – most particularly in the name of Islam: and that is the matter of faith in Islam itself. I’ll explain…

These are essentially unappealing, ill-educated, Godless, cowardly, nihilistic, incompetent, toxic, sociopathic failures. Had an accident of birth not had them born into Islam, they would just as easily have taken up a banner for Equal Rights for Gay Jewish Whales if it had lent a shred of legitimacy to their foetid little temper tantrum with its seismic and vile outcome.
