On meeting Rock Royalty

Courtesy of my close buddy Tony Scott at Southeast Radio in Wexford, I just did my first radio interview – with Gregg Allman! Just thinking how completely off the radar it would have been if you told me 20 years ago when I first heard Ramblin’ Man by the Allman Brothers Band that I’d be interviewing Gregg, it’s a reall buzz.

He’s quite like what you’d expect… he speaks with a slow, considered southern drawl that’s been distilled in bourbon casks for 30 years with a dash of Lucky Strike thrown in. I really did some time on researching the questions and I’m pleased because at one stage he said, “Man… you got some questions there, Fellah”.

But for me, the highlight was when I asked him how the new album would sound to someone who was at the Live at Filmore East recording in 1971. He pondered and drawled, “It’d be like you went back in time, but you went in a new suit”.

Mint! He also got into fits of giggles as I taught him the Irish battlecry, The Craic is Mighty!

I’ll be there at Vicar Street in Dublin on 4th July for the Low Country Blues gig and so looking forward to it. FYI his UK gigs are in London (Barbican), Birmingham (Symphony Hall) and Edinburgh (Usher Hall). The album’s brilliant. Go and see him live.
